My heart was racing as I read this. I only wanted to skip ahead to find out how the weekend went. So glad it went well and I wish you were as sure of your excellence as both your moms are.

This might be a little strange, but I came across your Substack somehow. We were in a math class together in high school, even though you were a grade (or 2?) below me. Anyway, your writing is truly incredible. You have a real gift. I just wanted to share that.

this is so unbelievably good. it both inspires me to write again and also......makes me want to buy any book you write inevitably soon

favorite lines:

"It is distance from the truest voice in my head, from the version of myself that is open, exfoliated, able to hear and feel and trust and write"

"I thought of close friends’ weddings and I could not imagine the orange light flooding the face of the mountain, or the feel of wind against skin when dancing outside, I could think only of the return label I’d have to find a printer for when my third butter yellow dress didn’t fit."

Jess, as always I am split wide open by your writing. You have such a unique gift for capturing the beating heart of love, loss and life. I read your words as a mother, as a friend of your mama and mommy, a sister to my too-soon-gone-brother. I want to gather you up in my arms and comfort you, but I know you are listening in the quiet times and know what you need to restore yourself. It is slow and non linear as you know. Happy for your leave of absence. I’m sure your gorgeous curls will resume holding on any time now. So glad you had a beautiful friend’s wedding, filled with colors, smiles and dancing. Your mama is still all around.
